The city of Dusseldorf today is formed from 10 districts, which are sudivided into 49 districts. It is a self-governing town (as some towns and cities in the region Rhein-Ruhr are). District Representative Assembly consist of 19 members. Chairman of the District representation is the district head. The metropolitan region Rhein-Ruhr is an economic region and urban agglomeration in Western Germany. It is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe and is the largest in Germany. In the 20 district towns and 10 districts live about 11 million inhabitants. Within a radius of 50 kilometres to Dusseldorf live about nine million people. The first written mention of Dusseldorf (Dusseldorp) dates back to the 1135. It was mentioned that the small town of Kaiserswerth, lying to the North of Dusseldorf, became a well fortified outpost, where soldiers kept their watchful eyes over every movement on the Rhine. Kaiserswerth is now a suburb of Dusseldorf in 1929. The strongest shopping street of the town and one of the greatest shopping streets of Germany is the Schadowstrasse. Because of its exclusive shops it is known as the Konigsallee, or short "Ko". The famous fountain Triton Group is located there. In the old town to it is easy to find old houses and historical monuments. Dusseldorf, unlike the Cologne, was not badly destroyed during World War 2, and this can be seen in architecture. Amoung preserved historical centers are districts Kaiserswerth and Gerresheim.
