The city owes its name from the time of the Roman Empress Agrippina, when the settlement became acknowledged by the name of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, in the year 50 BC. It was a place, where Romans took a garrison and passed an important trade with all regions of Germany. Because of its strategic importance on the Rhine, Cologne attracted many merchants and became a center of crafts and commerce. From 260 to 271 Cologne was the residence of Emperor of the Gallic Empire. The Romans introduced Christianity to Cologne, and the city became bishop seat from the fourth century. Ancient Ruins and some other vestiges of its past Roman can be vied in the city ourdays. Among them visitirs can see remains of Roman walls, Dionysus mosaic in the Roman-Germanic Museum, vestiges of the aqueduct Eifel which brought water from a distant source of a hundred kilometeres to the city.
Unlike Dusseldorf, historical heritage was preserved in Cologne not so good, because it had been subjected to severe bombing during World War 2. But Cologne Cathedral remained unharmed. Local residents believe that it was defended by God, but the case was that it served as a guide point for enemy aircraft. Today Cologne is a major cultural center of Germany. It can be called as a student town.
Cologne is famous for its distinctive beer Kolsch, which ages ago did come to light precisely in these locations. This is a light and delicate beer, with less bitterness than, for example, Pilsner beer has. It is, usually, liked by women. Kolsch is made on ancient warm fermenting technology. Just saying, it's not a lager beer. In Germany, beer Kolsch traditionally is in a tough competition with Munich stronger styles.
